Peruvian President José María Balcázar announced on Sunday, June 7, that Pope Leo XIV will arrive in Peru on November 10. Speaking in the northern city of Chiclayo, the president stated that the trip is scheduled to begin on that date, as reported by local media.
The Vatican has not yet officially confirmed the visit, which may also include stops in Uruguay and Argentina. Cardinal Daniel Sturla, Archbishop of Montevideo, previously suggested the Holy Father could visit Uruguay between late November and early December.
Pope Leo’s Deep Ties to Peru
Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, has a long history with Peru. He first arrived as a missionary in 1985, serving in Chulucanas and later as a formator and rector of a seminary in Trujillo. In 2015, he became Bishop of Chiclayo and acquired Peruvian citizenship.
He served in various roles in Peru until 2023, when he was called to the Vatican to head the Dicastery for Bishops. Pope Leo was elected on May 8, 2025, and in his first address, he offered a special greeting to his beloved Diocese of Chiclayo.
