Peru’s national legislature has passed a law declaring June as Life and Family Month throughout the nation. Law 32671, approved on June 17 and published in the official gazette El Peruano, commemorates “life and the importance of the family as a natural and fundamental institution of society.”

Milagros Jáuregui de Aguayo, the bill’s author, stated that “the family remains the primary setting for personal formation and the most important pillar of our society. Defending it means building a Peru with greater unity, solidarity, and hope.” During the parliamentary debate, she emphasized that “strengthening the family means strengthening the foundations of the nation.”

Carlos Polo, director of the Latin America office of the Population Research Institute, highlighted the law’s significance amid Peru’s declining birth rate and aging population. “The family, comprising father, mother, and children, constitutes the primary setting where life is passed on, values are instilled, and new generations are educated,” he said, adding that promoting the family creates cultural conditions for national continuity and prosperity.
