The Diocese of Chiclayo has announced the key sites Pope Leo XIV will visit in the city during his Nov. 11–17 apostolic visit to Peru. This visit marks a significant homecoming for the Holy Father, who once served as bishop of this diocese.
According to a diocesan statement, the Pope will visit the Cathedral of Chiclayo, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Peace, Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Catholic University, the districts of Santa Cruz and Zaña, and the open grounds of Reque Industrial Park. These locations will host the main gatherings and liturgical celebrations for the region.
The diocese expressed that the Pope’s return is a moment of great significance for the faithful, who “will welcome the successor of Peter with faith, hope, and a spirit of unity.” The visit to Chiclayo is part of a broader apostolic journey that includes Lima, Cusco, and Pucallpa.
The Peruvian Episcopal Conference (CEP) has welcomed the confirmation with “immense joy,” urging the faithful to prepare spiritually. Bishop Carlos García Camader, CEP president, said, “His presence among us will be a true gift for our people and an opportunity to renew our faith, strengthen hope, and walk united as a Church in the service of the Gospel.”
Cardinal Carlos Castillo, archbishop of Lima, noted the “enormous anticipation” among Peruvians. “We receive this news not only with great pleasure but also with a vital surge of encouragement that prepares us to commit ourselves generously to our faith,” he told Vatican News.
Peru’s President Keiko Fujimori wrote on X: “We received the confirmation with profound joy… It is news that fills millions of Peruvians with excitement.” She added that the Pope’s arrival “will be a moment of encounter for our faith and a message of hope for our country,” concluding: “Holy Father, we await you with open hearts to welcome you back to your home, Peru.”
Cardinal Castillo also highlighted that the visit comes amid challenges such as insecurity and social difficulties, and expressed hope that the Pope’s presence might foster reflection. “May the Holy Father disarm us and make it possible for a peace that is both unarmed and disarming to unfold with full clarity,” he said.
