The U.S. will invest $66,240 to restore St. James (Santiago) Church in the town of Curahuara de Carangas, Bolivia, known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes” for its 17th-century murals. The project, announced on April 21, is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Cultural Preservation Fund and will repair the thatched roof, reconstruct buttresses, and restore deteriorated exterior walls and façades. The church, built between 1587 and 1608, is a national monument since 1960 and aims to boost local tourism as part of Bolivia’s religious tourism strategy.
