The Mexican Bishops’ Conference has called on the faithful to enter deeply into the spirit of Holy Week, a time that powerfully proclaims the ultimate triumph of God’s love over all forms of evil.
In a video message, the bishops emphasized that Holy Week is an invitation to contemplate the profound mystery of God’s love, fully revealed in the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “This is not merely a commemoration of past events,” they stated, “but an opportunity to open our hearts so that Christ may once again transform our personal lives and the history of our nation.”
The bishops affirmed that the Church in Mexico walks in solidarity with its people, especially with those who suffer, those who seek hope, and those who cry out for peace and justice. They described Holy Week as a sacred pause, calling for sincere self-examination and a return to God, a journey that begins with attentive listening: to God’s word, to the hearts of our brothers and sisters, and to the cries of the poor, the victims, and the despairing.
“God continues to walk with us, even in the midst of trials,” the prelates reminded the faithful. “In the face of this reality, the cross of Christ is raised as the definitive sign of love and hope.”
They issued a specific call to renounce hurtful speech and instead sow words that build communion. “In a world where insults, accusations, and polarization easily multiply, we, as disciples of Christ, are called to speak with truth, respect, and charity. The cross of Christ does not divide; it reconciles,” they emphasized.
The core message of their reflection was one of hope rooted in the Paschal Mystery. “Holy Week reminds us of a profound truth: Evil does not have the final word. The suffering of the cross does not end in the darkness of the tomb,” they declared. “God always opens a new path of life. Easter is humanity’s great hope. The risen Christ shows us that life is stronger than death, love is stronger than hatred, and hope is stronger than fear.”
