Chants of “Yes to life, no to abortion!” and “Life is a victory!” echoed through downtown Mexico City over the weekend as thousands of young people gathered for the annual March for Life. The protest took place the day after the anniversary of the law passed on April 24, 2007, when Mexico City legalized abortion on demand for up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Between 2007 and 2025, nearly 300,000 abortions were performed in the capital, according to the Mexico City Secretariat of Public Health. This decision paved the way for similar laws in 24 of Mexico’s 31 states.

Organizers said more than 2,000 people gathered at the Monument to the Revolution before marching to the Mexico City Legislature. Along the route, young people led with drums, chants, and signs defending motherhood and the unborn.
Macarena Muñoz, 22, told ACI Prensa that she came to show that “pro-life young people… want to see these laws changed.” She added that defending life is fundamental to all other rights.
Legal Expansion Under Sheinbaum
Since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in 2024, new abortion laws have been passed in Jalisco, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Mexico, Chiapas, Nayarit, Chihuahua, Campeche, Yucatán, and Tabasco. Participants from at least 20 cities attended the march.
Regina Hinojosa, 24, from Puebla, lamented that legal abortion has not benefited women, arguing they “deserve more laws in favor of their well-being and that of their babies.” Juan Pablo Perea, 21, from Michoacán, urged other young people to fight, saying, “without life, there is no future.”
Legislator Juliana Rosario Hernández Quintanar of the National Action Party joined the march, calling for a “Day of Life” and more protections for the unborn.
“We are a generation that does not grow accustomed, that does not sell out, that does not remain silent, that does not surrender,” stated a manifesto read at the event’s close. “We will not give up. We will not tire of defending the truth.”
