Ecuador will renew its consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 12, 2026, in a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Luis Cabrera at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Guayaquil. The event, open to all faithful, civil authorities, and military personnel, aims to seek divine protection and mercy amid rising violence and insecurity, particularly in Guayaquil, the city hardest hit by drug-related crime. This renewal marks the latest in a series of acts since Ecuador became the first nation consecrated to the Sacred Heart on March 25, 1874.
According to official data from Ecuador’s Ministry of the Interior, the country recorded 2,778 homicides from January to April 2026, with 674 in the Guayaquil, Durán, and Samborondón area in the first three months. The renewal serves as a spiritual response to social challenges, emphasizing hope, reconciliation, and commitment to peace.
Pablo Moysam, spokesman for the organizing committee, highlighted the event’s significance: ‘In a context marked by social challenges, violence, and uncertainty, this act helps renew confidence that the country can build paths of peace, justice, and fraternity through personal conversion and solidarity among all.’
The last renewal occurred on March 25, 2024, during the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress in Quito. This year’s ceremony coincides with the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, uniting the nation in prayer for protection and unity.
